Production of the Xbox One game console may pause

Производство Xbox One могут замедлить или вовсе остановить

At a recent Microsoft management meeting with shareholders, CFO Amy Hood said the company would slow down the pace of production of Xbox One gaming consoles, as the supply significantly exceeds demand.

The decline in production is due to the fact that in the past quarter, which ended March 31, 2014, Microsoft was able to sell only 1.2 million Xbox One consoles, which in no way met the expectations of management. The previous generation Xbox 360 console was sold in the amount of 800,000 boxes.

From the first day of the start of Xbox One sales, the Redmond company managed to ship about 5 million boxes of consoles to stores. Here, of course, you should pay attention to the word "ship". The company sells consoles to retail chains, which, in turn, are trying to sell them to the final consumer. In this case, a fairly large number of consoles Xbox One is still gathering dust on the shelves of numerous stores in the US and Europe. Rumor has it that out of the shipped five million Xbox One, about four million were sold to consumers.

The main competitor of the American console, Sony Playstation 4, in turn, was sold in the amount of 7 million boxes. In the case of Sony, we are talking about specific sales to consumers, and not about shipments to retail chains. Over the past quarter, the Japanese have sold 3 million of their consoles, which is 1.8 million more than a competitor from the United States.

When representatives of Microsoft last reported on the real sales of their new console, it was about three million consoles sold. After that, the press releases featured figures of shipments to stores. Apparently, sales of the Xbox One really are not so hot.

At the moment, the company’s management must make a difficult decision: to slow down the pace of production of Xbox One, or to stop it at all. This forced pause will last until the demand for the game console increases again. Until then, supplying new batches of set-top boxes to stores is simply unprofitable for the manufacturer.

Amy Hood also expressed optimism about the future of the Xbox, because already in June we are waiting for the E3 exhibition, which will make loud statements and announcements, new games, services and much, much more. Hard times, however, now not only at Xbox One, but also at the Japanese game console Nintendo Wii U, which is sold very badly.
