Tokyo. Inside the main office of Sony, located in the heart of Tokyo’s Shinagawa district, Yasuhiro Otori is going to show that almost no one has even seen inside the Japanese technical giant - the internal layout of the PlayStation 4 game console. Wired journalists were invited to this exclusive meeting. We decided to share the story of one of them with you.
It's mid-October. Four weeks left before the new gaming console goes to the US and Canadian markets. Otori, director of a team of technical engineers responsible for assembling a PlayStation 4, surrounded by other specialists from the company, several PR people, two journalists, one translator and six guys from the film crew who are going to shoot the upcoming moment, is in front of the assembled prefix PS4, which he is now the first in the whole world will take apart.
The video director gives the go-ahead, just like when shooting some old film, and one of the most important for Sony people is taken for a painstaking analysis of the console, which will continue for the next hour and a half. Part by part, component by component. The event is so exciting that Otori even uses white gloves. PlayStation 4 disassembly begins.
Upon completion of this action, we realized one important thing - the hardware of the console is both simple and very powerful. Marc Czerny, the chief designer of the PlayStation 4, tried to convey to other specialists, including Otori himself, the idea that Sony should stop using the excessively complex Cell microprocessor architecture based on the PlayStation 3 prefix and build the new PlayStation 4 "X86 compatible crystal, similar processors, which are installed in the vast majority of personal computers over the past three decades." The essence of this idea was to simplify the work of future game developers for the new game console as much as possible so that people would concentrate as much as possible directly on the development of the game itself, and not understand all the tricks of architecture.
“As a result, we got a platform that is more focused on games and less on issues related to its hardware,” says Chris Zimmerman, co-founder and head of game development at Sucker Punch Productions, that is, those guys that made the PlayStation 3 game InFAMOUS and which Sony subsequently decided to buy. Now the team of igrodelov finishes work on the game InFAMOUS: Second Son for a new console.
“Future game development has gained a kind of standard. The Sony stuffing consoles from Sony historically has always had its own characteristics and tricks. And if you managed to find these tricks and features, and then use them in your needs, then you get game masterpieces. But this business required tremendous efforts that boiled down to just getting everything to work properly. In the case of the new generation, everything will be much easier. "
It is said that the PlayStation 4 goes beyond the average computer. Perhaps this is due to the fact that its central processor, the brain of any computer, is combined with the GPU, which is usually used for processing graphics. As a result, we get a single crystal, capable, not without the help of 8 GB of GDDR5 standard memory, which is 16 times more efficient than the one used in the PS3, to perform two tasks simultaneously. According to Cherni, this is exactly what makes it possible to create richer game worlds on the PlayStation 4. Now every NPC in the virtual city of any PS4 game “will finally be able to look completely different.” Everything will depend on the developers themselves.
Chris Zimmerman agrees:
“There will be more details on the screen at one moment, but for us, the developers, real changes are more of a qualitative nature,” explains Chris, saying that now the console will allow us to draw more things within one frame and more competently work with realistic lighting.
"Those things that we could not embody on consoles before - realistic wet streets, for example - will now be available to any developer."
It should be understood that most high-performance gaming personal computers are capable of providing the same level of power as the PS4, but consoles allow you to expand not only the big games, but also open the frame for a new world of mobile games, and also have one indisputable advantage over the PC: a giant gaming entertainment industrial machine like Sony, which owns many companies, including the same Sucker Punch, which exclusively release the game under their console. That is what justifies the price.
“This is no longer just a box with a bunch of games,” says Harold Goldberg, an expert in the field of video games and the author of the book “All Your Base Are Belong to Us: How 50 Years of Conceding Pop Culture Videogames” (“All your bases now belong to us, or How video games conquered pop culture for 50 years).
In the photos below, you can see that the power supply is integrated into the console itself, which is good news - now you don’t have to think where to hide it so that it doesn’t interfere. Otherwise - a complete set. Starting from Wi-Fi and Bluetooth antennas and ending with an optical drive capable of reading DVDs and Blue-ray discs. You can even ask the question - “how could such powerful equipment fit in a relatively thin PlayStation 4”? However, the design of the console is designed in such a way that allows you to effectively remove the heat behind its body. Even two heat-conducting tubes and a radial cooler specially designed by Sony itself help in this matter.
The only thing that can not give you a new PlayStation 4 is the ability to play games designed for the PlayStation 3. In all other respects, “Greatness Awaits” from November 29th.
