All good things end sooner or later, and that's the life cycle of the incredibly popular Nintendo Wii gaming console has reached its logical conclusion. On October 21, 2013, Nintendo Japan announced on its official website that the Wii console was discontinued.
Since its launch on the market in November 2006, Wii’s total sales are over 100 million units (the latest official figures are 100.04 million), which automatically makes it Nintendo’s most popular home gaming console and the third Game Boy handheld (118 , 7 million) and Nintendo DS (153.9 million).
The Nintendo Wii console was a kind of turning point in the history of the Japanese company. After failures in the field of home consoles in the face of Nintendo 64 and Nintendo Game Cube, the company faced an obvious choice: to chase after competitors in the face of Microsoft and Sony with their powerful hardware, or choose another, their own way, completely changing the company's course. The decision ultimately gave life to the Nintendo Wii gaming console, which did not shine with power and technical characteristics, but made it possible to sense sensations unknown to players.
Motion control for many really turned out to be the very “novelty” for which the Nintendo Wii literally swept off the shelves. A focus on the console for the whole family, only consolidated the position of the brainchild of a Japanese company in the market. A little later, an additional accessory for the console was announced for the console, which, in conjunction with the Wii Fit game, made fitness classes at home available to anyone.
Over the past seven years, there have been many great games on the Wii. Among them are both the legendary series of the Nintendo company, such as The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Donkey Kong, Super Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart Wii, and third-party games like Xenoblade, MadWorld and Monster Hunter Tri.
After winding up the production of Wii, Nintendo plans to concentrate fully on promoting its new products: the Nintendo 3DS handheld console, as well as the not-so-popular Nintendo Wii U home console.
