Sony Playstation 4 game console overview

I received my box from the Playstation 4 on the morning of November 28, the day before the official release of the console in Russia. For several days of communication with the console, I have accumulated enough impressions and emotions to share them with you, dear readers.

First impressions

I have already published my first impressions of acquaintance with the console in the form of photoboxing, but still, I want to focus on a few important points.

After removing the PS4 from the box, you immediately notice that the console is very high quality assembled. Never for a moment does the thought arise that Sony saved on everything indiscriminately. Yes, of course, her body is not made of titanium and not even of aluminum with glass, but the plastic, which was used by Japanese engineers to create the console, makes a very pleasant impression.

The glossy half of the console, located on the left, of course, will be very dirty if you grab it with dirty hands. Fingerprints on it will be remarkably visible from almost any angle, so be careful not to have to wipe it with a cloth. The right side of the console is made of textured material on which your fingerprints will not be noticeable.

The buttons for turning on and ejecting disks from the console seemed especially incredible to me. They are sensory, which really pleased me. The last time the touch buttons were present in the very first revisions of the Playstation 3 consoles, but when switching to the Slim form factor, they were abandoned to reduce the cost of the console production process. Just swipe your finger across the console's surface near the Power button, located just to the right and above the hole for the Bu-Ray disc, and it will turn on.

Connect and configure

Connecting a console is a very simple process. We stick in the power cable. Note - there is no external power supply the size of Mexico, unlike XboxOne! We plug the HDMI cable into the console and into the TV (the analog cord with “tulips” in the PS4 is no longer supported). Turn on the console. We are happy.

At the top of the console is an oblong LED, which, depending on the situation, is able to change the color of its glow. When the console is loading - it is blue in color, during operation - it turns white, in sleep mode - it is orange, and if your console is overheated - the LED turns warning red.

The process of setting up a console update will take you about 10-15 minutes depending on the speed of your Internet connection. By the way, try to immediately connect the console to the Internet using a wire or Wi-Fi, because without access to the network you lose a good half of its useful functions. The prefix will start downloading the new firmware version itself, and when it downloads it will prompt you to install it in the internal NAND memory. The main thing is not to turn off the console from the outlet during this important process, otherwise you will get a lifeless brick at the exit.

After setting the current date and time, you will be asked to enter your username and password to access the account of the PSN game network. If you already have an account - good. If you have bypassed the PS3 era, you’ll have to sign up, otherwise you won’t get access to the PSN Store, which has great video games for you, including completely free ones. You can activate several accounts on the console, for example, to make purchases of games in different regions. I have two accounts on the console: Russian and American. You can switch between them at any time.

You can also register on the console special guest accounts for friends who came to visit you and want to play with you, but they do not have their own console, and, accordingly, a PSN account. After completing the game session, the guest account is simply deleted from the console.

If you have a PS Camera, which is sold separately, you can configure the console so that it recognizes you when it is turned on and automatically logs in to your account. You need to pose a little in front of the camera, turning your face at different angles, following the instructions that will show you on the screen. As soon as the set-top box remembers you, it immediately turns into a kind of joyful puppy, which of all the people in the room finds your face and joyfully welcomes its owner, activating his account. Of course, if you do not like that the PS4 camera is constantly watching you, you can turn it off at any time.

Interface

The interface of the Playstation 4 is just a song. Everything is very fast. So fast that at first I could not believe it. After the previous generation of consoles such a huge speed seems really something from the world of fiction. The XMB interface, familiar to you since the days of the PS3, has ceased to exist, although the new interface is somewhat reminiscent of the horizontal menus of the previous Sony console.

The PS4 operating system is called Orbis and was developed based on FreeBSD. There is nothing superfluous in it. Each element regularly performs the function assigned to it, and it copes with it simply with a bang.

The interface itself can be divided into two parts: upper and lower. The top horizontal line of icons is a system menu that contains information about various notifications, reminders, personal messages from friends, information about your trophies, system settings, power management, and the PSN Store. And the lower horizontal line of larger icons represents your video game library. You can instantly switch between the top and bottom of the interface, while getting lost in such a simple menu is almost impossible.

Those games that you run more often than others, move closer to the left edge of the menu, so you can find them faster. Games that run rarely or do not run at all, move closer to the end of the queue, so as not to disturb anyone. There is no manual sorting yet, but I am sure that in future firmware, all this will be optimized and corrected. In the meantime, not many games have been released so that you can become entangled in their diversity.

Under each game icon there is a small additional menu that displays the latest trophies you received during the passage, various bonus materials from the developers, as well as other useful information about the game.

Among your games there is a “Live with Playstation” button. In this menu, you can watch in real time how people from different countries go through the games they have bought and comment on their progress using PS Camera. These broadcasts are implemented at a very decent level, so be sure to check out such a wonderful opportunity to see the games you are interested in before purchasing them in the store. You can even comment on other people's broadcasts, ask questions to the players or give them valuable advice on how to play the game.

There is a “What's New” button in the bottom menu, which is a kind of your wall on Facebook or VKontakte. In this social menu you will see what your friends and acquaintances do with their game consoles. Who acquired what game, who knocked what trophy, who transmits what gameplay at the moment. Also, right from this menu, you can join a multiplayer battle in which your friends participate, if you have a disk or digital version of this game. In general, now everything has become quickly and incredibly convenient. Next Gen has finally come to our house!

By the way, you can control the console with your voice. To do this, you will need to connect the PS Camera to it or simply plug the complete mono headset into the gamepad. At any time, say the command “Playstation” and the console will begin to listen carefully to you. A list of available commands will appear on the screen. You can start the voice command of any of the games you have, take a screenshot, put the console into sleep mode, and so on. If you have not given any valuable instructions to the console within 10 seconds, the voice control mode is automatically turned off. While the list of commands, of course, is not very extensive. But I am sure that with the release of future firmware, it may still change. And yes, while only voice control in English is supported. So, if you have a pronounced Russian accent, the console may simply not understand you.

DualShock 4 Gamepad

About the new gamepad in general, I want to write a whole separate material - before that it is remarkable in all respects. Material, build quality, new triggers and analog handles - everything has changed a lot since the gamepad for the PS3. But let's get everything in order.

Plastic of two types, which is made of a new gamepad, as I wrote earlier, the touch is just great. The plastic on top is smooth, and the bottom is rough textured, which will not allow the gamepad to slide even in palms that are sweaty from the strain.

The new analog knobs have been completely redesigned from the ground up. Their so-called dead zone (a certain angle of inclination of the handle, within which the console does not respond to your action) was reduced, which makes the control even more sensitive and accurate. Covering the arms with a special rubberized material eliminates the possibility of them slipping out from under your thumbs. Also, special recesses were made in the upper part of the arms, which further enhances their grip with the player's fingers. I already appreciated these innovations, and really it became much more convenient to play.

Also gamepad triggers were reworked. In Dualshock 3 a very big problem was the unsuccessful form of the lower hammers (L2 and R2). In some cases, when a user put a gamepad on a flat hard surface, the trigger could lightly press, due to which, for example, the movie watched could be removed from the pause, or the character in the game would shoot from a machine gun than betray his location to his opponents. In the case of the Dualshock 4, Sony engineers took that into account. Now the lower triggers are curved like the triggers of a real weapon, and you can’t push them anymore just by putting the gamepad on the table.

The Start and Select buttons have been replaced with Options and Share. Options opens additional context menus and pauses the game, and with Share you can start streaming your game on Twitch or Ustream, upload a video of up to 15 minutes on Facebook, or share a spectacular screenshot on Twitter. Social opportunities do not oblige you to anything, but as a nice addition, they may well please someone. For example, as a journalist, it is very convenient for me to pull screenshots from games in this way. Let's see if people will use these functions or soon they will simply forget about their existence.

The very arrangement of the Option and Share buttons can be attributed to the minus of the new gamepad, since they are very high and in the dark they are not so easy to find. They are very flat and are hard pressed to prevent accidental pressing. I admit honestly, out of habit, I continue to look in the dark for the usual Start and Select buttons, and when I don’t find them, I get a little panic, because I completely forgot that these buttons are no more.

A very convenient touchpad is built into the gamepad, which will bring a lot of fresh emotions when interacting with some games. This capacitive touchscreen surface can also function as a button, similar to the touchpad integrated in the MacBook Air. So far I have come across support for the touchpad only in Killzone: Shadow Fall, where with its help you can instantly switch the modes of your cyber helper, which is very critical during an active fight. Another game where the touchpad is supported is Assassins Creed 4: Black Flag. In it, you can scale the world map with two fingers, which is actually very convenient and saves a lot of time.

The luminous Lightbar panel does not prevent you from playing in the dark. Many were very worried about this innovation, since this LED shines very brightly and could well distract the player from what is happening on the screen. In fact, Lightbar only adds zest to the gameplay. The panel is located on the gamepad in such a way that you don’t see it at all, but it is slightly reflected on your fingers on the back of the controller with a kind of soft glow. When you run out of vitality in any game, you see that your fingers become reddish and immediately group together. And when everything is in order, the panel glows with a soothing green light. In general, I almost immediately adapted the new gamepad as a flashlight. Using it in the dark it is very easy to find a TV remote, charging for a phone or a game disc in the closet, so Sony knowingly added such a “chip” to the new DualShock 4. In general, of course, the Lightbar is primarily used to identify players with using PS Camera. Each player receives his own unique color of the gamepad panel, and the console places the players inside the game in the order in which they sit on the sofa. It is very logical and convenient. You no longer need to think who has clutched at which controller and who needs to switch places with whom. All this will make for you the prefix itself.

The controller also has a tiny speaker, through which some games will communicate with you, bypassing the TV speakers. For example, in Resogun, a mechanized voice from a speaker is broadcasting what is happening now out of your sight, so that you don’t miss anything important. And in Killzone: Shadow Fall from the gamepad audiologists found by you will be heard. This speaker allows you to add new sensations to the seemingly familiar to us games. By the way, if you play at night or do not want to make a particularly loud noise, the speaker can be turned down. To do this, hold the PS button in the center of the controller and select the gamepad sound setting from the drop-down menu. Customize it to your taste or turn it off completely.

I was pleased a lot by the fact that now you can type text using the gyro and accelerometer built into the gamepad. You can type the text in the old-fashioned way, simply using the controller D-Pad, or you can switch on the new mode at any time by pressing R3 (click on the right analog handle of the gamepad until it clicks). Now you can use the controller as a digital pointer, quickly moving the cursor over the keys with letters and numbers. It will not be very convenient at first, but I promise you that in a couple of days you will get used to it so much that you will print texts no worse than a regular stenographer.

If you want to immediately evaluate all the innovations of DualShock 4, then you have such an opportunity! Included with each PS4 is the free game The Playroom, which is an interactive demo version of the new gamepad features. But for a full acquaintance with DualShock 4 you will need a PS Camera. With this game you can interact with charming tiny robots living inside your game controller, as well as communicate with a sensible flying bot that will react to all your actions. You can also play virtual PONG with your buddies, if you have at least two gamepads. In the future, new video games will be available for this game. The first addition, for example, has already come out, and it allows you to use your iOS or Android tablet to draw any objects that you can then easily transfer to the TV screen, where they come to life and take real forms.

The operating time of the controller on one charge lasts for about 4-5 hours, which, on the one hand, is not bad, considering that the NintendoWiiU controller, for example, is capable of holding a charge of no more than 3 hours. But, on the other hand, it is not so much compared to DualShock 3. In principle, everything can be used and adjusted to itself over time. So I do not think this is a very serious drawback of the PS4 gamepad.

By the way, the gamepad is now recharging with the help of a micro-USB wire, even while the console is in sleep mode. This feature was not enough for us at the time of PS3.

Download and install games

If you bought the game on physical media, that is, on a Blu-Ray disc, simply insert it into the drive of your console and turn it on. Installing the game will start automatically. You can go and make yourself some tea, and when you come back from the kitchen, the game can already be started. In this case, of course, only part of the game data will be installed on the internal hard disk. However, while you are passing a couple of first levels of the game, all the remaining information will already be safely installed on the HDD. Patches and game updates are downloaded and installed automatically. You will only see them in the list of notifications, they say, such and such a game has recently been updated to a new version. Everything looks very harmonious and clear.

In the case of the digital purchase of the game, you will have to wait a little longer, since the speed of your Internet is hardly as huge as the speed of reading data from a Blu-Ray disc. However, you do not have to download all 40 gigabytes of game data to start playing it. The console will download the first 2-4 gigabyte data packet and will inform you that you can already start the game.

В первый день, когда я только подключил консоль к интернету, передо мной стояла нелёгкая задача: нужно было скачать порядка 100 гигабайт игр из сети. Моё сетевое соединение в совокупности со скоростью серверов Sony показывало скорость около 1 МБ/с, а это, как вы понимаете, очень и очень медленно. Ещё одним немаловажным моментом оказалось, что PS4 пока ещё не умеет ставить отдельно взятую закачку на паузу, чтобы разгрузить ваш интернет-канал. Приставка просто распараллеливает трафик между всеми активными закачками и тянет всё равномерно. Надеюсь, в будущем, этот момент исправят и доработают. Даже на PS3 вы могли поставить отдельные закачки на паузу и позднее продолжить их.

Я нашёл решение проблемы медленной загрузки совершенно случайно. Просто перевёл консоль в режим ожидания. Она выключается, на её поверхности загорается оранжевая линия, а кулеры крутятся так медленно, что их слышно лишь если вы приложите ухо к поверхности PS4. В спящем режиме скорость скачивания игр почему-то выросла в разы. Уже спустя пару часов я вновь включил консоль и обнаружил, что практически все игры скачались. Так что, если у вас будет проблема со скоростью загрузки игр – просто переведите консоль в режим ожидания и потерпите немного. В фоновом режиме она тянет их из Сети куда быстрее.

Работа консоли

Насколько я помню, некоторых наших читателей очень интересовал вопрос шумности новой консоли Sony. Во время работы приставка издаёт шум примерно на уровне шума PS3, то есть не такой уж и громкий, чтобы разбудить, например, спящего в этой комнате человека.

При переходе в спящий режим консоль сначала немного шумит, охлаждая процессор и остальные элементы, а затем шум исчезает практически полностью. Консоль в это время скачивает обновления для ваших игр, проверяет наличие обновлений прошивки, следит за тем, чем занимаются ваши друзья и так далее. Делает она всё это совершенно незаметно для вас.

Во время особенно перегруженных графикой игр консоль может начать шуметь чуть громче. В неё встроен ступенчатый кулер, который способен работать на нескольких скоростях. Если у вас в доме круглый год духота, а сама консоль стоит в опасной близости от задней стенки тумбочки или ограждена чем-либо слева и справа – не исключено, что она будет перегреваться из-за нехватки воздуха, а её шумность возрастёт в несколько раз. Обязательно обеспечьте Playstation 4 просторным местом с хорошей вентиляцией, и тогда вы вообще не будете её слышать.

Я обнаружил один не совсем приятный момент в использовании консоли, который может расстроить некоторых людей. Если приставку поставить вертикально, то её нижние вентиляционные отверстия частично перекрываются, из-за чего она начинает греться сильнее и, соответственно, сильнее шуметь. У меня под рукой нет специальной фирменной подставки для PS4. Вполне может быть, подставка спроектирована таким образом, чтобы ничем не нарушать равномерное поступление воздуха в консоль. Как только возвращаешь консоль в горизонтальное положение, она снова нормально вентилируется и становится бесшумной. Так что, настоятельно не рекомендую ставить консоль вертикально, если у вас нет специальной PS4-подставки. Это может привести к её перегреву. Но даже если это и случится с вашей приставкой, не переживайте. PS4 снабжена автоматическим механизмом отключения в случае перегрева. Она просто предупредит вас, что перегрелась, после чего перейдёт в ждущий режим для того, чтобы остыть.

Процесс установки игры с диска происходит практически бесшумно. Конечно, привод консоли издаёт характерные для оптических приводов звуки, но их нельзя назвать особенно громкими или раздражающими. Так что, все сообщения в интернете относительно того, что в процессе установки игр с дисков консоль ревёт, как реактивный самолёт, можно смело считать всего лишь описанием случаев заводского брака.

Вообще, про брак в первых партиях консолей было сказано уже немало. У кого-то был бракованный HDMI-out порт на консоли, из-за чего пропадала картинка. Кто-то просто не мог включить консоль и она бесконечно подмигивала ему голубой светодиодной линией на корпусе. У кого-то консоль просто ни с того, ни с сего перегревалась и выключалась. На сегодняшний день мне не известен ни один случай, когда кто-либо из моих друзей и знакомых столкнулся бы с бракованной Playstation 4. Многие, включая меня, заказывали свою приставку с Amazon.com, где, судя по всему, и была замечена бракованная партия из нескольких тысяч консолей. Другие приобрели приставку в российских магазинах. Пока все Playstation 4 исправно работают и не дают своим обладателям никаких поводов для беспокойства. Так что, шумиха вокруг большого количества бракованных приставок, была сильно преувеличена.

Games

Сразу же после включения Playstation 4 и регистрации в PSN, я рекомендую вам оплатить подписку на сервис PS Plus, которая позволит вам играть с друзьями по Сети и, что самое важное, каждый месяц скачивать замечательные игры совершенно бесплатно. Подписка эта стоит около 200 рублей в месяц, а если берёте сразу годовой абонемент, она обойдётся вам и того дешевле. В ноябре бесплатными играми стали шикарный скролл-шутер Resogun и платформер-головоломка Contrast.

Если вы хотите поразить своих друзей и знакомых невероятной графикой – рекомендую вам приобрести игру Killzone: Shadow Fall (в русском переводе – Killzone: В плену сумрака). У этой игры лишь один недостаток – анимация персонажей. Я и сам удивляюсь, почему внутренние студии Sony не могли себе позволить использовать MoCap для лиц актёров, а вместо этого обошлись шаблонной «неживой» механической анимацией. Но в остальном игра прекрасна и не раз поразит вас своей масштабностью и красотой окружающего мира.

Если в вашей семье есть дети, вы можете приобрести игру Knack. Она очень яркая и всем своим видом похожа на мультфильмы студии Pixar. Но обязательно выберите сначала самую лёгкую сложность прохождения, так как на высоких сложностях игра становится просто непроходимой. Хотя это наверняка понравится любителям острых ощущений.

Далее можно перечислить мультиплатформенные проекты для PS4. Assassins Creed 4: Black Flag обязательно придётся по душе поклонникам этого популярного экшен-сериала и поразит отличным качеством графики в разрешении 1080р. Новую Need for Speed: Rivals очень тепло восприняли как игроки, так и критики. Call of Duty: Ghosts не блещет особыми нововведениями, ведь эту игру фанаты готовы покупать просто за одно название. Спортивный симулятор FIFA 14 заиграет новыми красками на экране вашего телевизора. А шикарный Battlefield 4 выглядит на консоли Sony практически также эффектно, как и на дорогих PC с мощными графическими картами.

Если у вас нет подписки PS Plus, а играть всё же очень хочется, вы можете скачать одну из нескольких бесплатных многопользовательских игр. В России уже сейчас доступна онлайновая игра War Thunder, которая является своеобразным ответом на популярную белорусскую ММО World of Tanks, только с самолётами в главной роли. Также под русским аккаунтом вы можете скачать онлайн-экшен от третьего лица Warframe. Если же у вас есть американский PSN-аккаунт, вы сможете скачать себе DC Universe про супергероев и очень быстрый многопользовательский шутер Blacklight Retribution.

Другими словами, каждый может найти себе одну-две игры по вкусу для того, чтобы занять свои вечера в предвкушении выпуска новых игр для этой консоли.

Интеграция с другими устройствами

Обязательно скачайте на свой смартфон или планшет бесплатное приложение Playstation App, с помощью которого можно полноценно управлять своей консолью PS4 дистанционно. К примеру, вы находитесь в своём рабочем офисе, а сегодня выходит новая часть вашей любимой игры. Как сделать так, чтобы вечером после работы вам не пришлось ждать, пока игра скачается и установится? Нет ничего проще! Включаете приложение на телефоне, входите в магазин, приобретаете игру и отдаёте консоли приказ скачать её к вашему возвращению. Когда вы будете дома – установленная игра будет терпеливо дожидаться вас на внутреннем винчестере консоли.

В некоторых играх будет интегрирована поддержка смартфонов и планшетов в качестве второго экрана. Я пока с такими играми не сталкивался, но практически наверняка эта функция будет в будущих проектах для PS4 вроде Watch Dogs и Tom Clancy's The Division.

Поддержку функции Remote Play вы можете оценить уже прямо сейчас. Если у вас дома есть карманная приставка Playstation Vita и Wi-Fi роутер, вы можете легко и очень быстро подключить малютку Vita к своей PS4. Это пригодится вам в том случае, когда родные требуют уступить им телевизор или вам необходимо уединиться в туалете, а игру прекращать при этом ну никак не хочется. Сразу предугадаю вопрос: что же делать, когда в игре на PS4 используются четыре курка, а на PS Vita их всего два? Дополнительные курки в случае с Vita перенесены на её заднюю панель. Вы привыкните к этим виртуальным кнопкам буквально через 5-10 минут.

Итоги

Playstation 4 – очень качественная консоль, которая изначально затачивалась исключительно под видеоигры, а не для того, чтобы стать приёмником телевизионного сигнала или медиацентром. Она гениально сконструирована и отлично продумана в плане пользовательского интерфейса. Если вы по-настоящему увлекаетесь играми, то рано или поздно вы всё равно её купите и полюбите всем сердцем.

Плюсы консоли:

• Отличный компактный дизайн и высокое качество сборки.
• Замечательный геймпад с кучей новых функций.
• Невероятное качество графики и честное разрешение 1080p.
• Очень удобный и интуитивно понятный интерфейс.
• Множество социальных функций для тех, кто любит общаться.
• Высокая скорость установки игр с дисков.
• Возможность самостоятельно заменить комплектный HDD на новый.
• Отсутствие внешнего блока питания.
• Наличие бесплатных игр, не требующих платной подписки.
• Отличная интеграция с Playstation Vita, смартфонами и планшетами.

Минусы консоли:

• Небольшая стартовая линейка игр может кого-то разочаровать.
• Нельзя поставить PS4 вертикально без специальной подставки.
• Не очень удобное расположение кнопок Options и Share.
• Невозможность поставить скачиваемую игру на паузу.
• Контроллер DualShock 4 разряжается довольно быстро.
