Installing an SSD in PlayStation 4 will be a waste of money

PlayStation-4

Some of those who have made a pre-order and are waiting for delivery of a new PlayStation 4 game console to the door, it is quite possible that they are already beginning to think about replacing the standard 500 GB hard drive with which the console comes with something more capacious and productive. The benefit of this opportunity offers itself Sony. One option for replacing the standard HDD may be a solid-state drive (SSD), though not everything is as obvious as it seems at first glance.

The Tested information gaming blog team decided to compare the performance between a standard hard drive, a solid-state drive and a hybrid hard drive and find out if the game is worth the candle.

Replacing the standard 500GB hard drive of the HGST company (but essentially Western Digital), first with a Samsung 250 GB solid state drive with an average value of $ 175, and then a Seagate hybrid hard disk drive (SSHD) with a capacity of 1 TB and cost 110 dollars.

As part of testing, it turned out that the download time for the Killzone: Shadow Fall game, which is exclusive to the PlayStation 4, when using the standard hard drive that comes with the prefix, was 60 seconds. With a hybrid hard disk (SSHD) it took 42 seconds to load the game, and 39 seconds when using a solid-state drive.

The Tested team explains this result as follows:

“The importance of the built-in PlayStation 4 drive is now even higher than before. But the 500 GB hard drive included with the set-top box is slow to install and download games. The good news is that the console allows you to quickly and easily replace this drive. We came to the conclusion that the best option for replacement would be a hybrid hard drive, which would cost the console owner an extra $ 100 extra. The best option for this type of carrier is because: first, it is cheaper than SSD; secondly, not much behind the SSD, and thirdly, you can buy for about $ 100 a hybrid drive with a capacity of 1 TB, which is twice as large as the standard hard disk drive that is offered with the set-top box ”.

Tested believes that replacing a standard hard disk with a solid-state drive of the same size would be very inappropriate. In the West, a 500 GB SSD can be found for about $ 300. If we consider that the prefix itself costs $ 399, then installing an SSD in it will be a mere waste of money. In this case, the Tested team advises it is better to install an SSD in your home computer, where it will be much more useful.
