The gaming portal Kotaku.com made some calculations and published very interesting statistics that vividly demonstrate the evolution of prices on gaming consoles, starting from 1977 to our days. Importantly, journalists counted the original price tags for inflation over the years.
If you think that $ 500 for the Xbox One is pure robbery, I advise you to recall the year of 1993, when SNK’s Neo-Geo prefix appeared on the shelves with a price tag of $ 650 (today it would be $ 1,125). Neo-Geo, along with the Panasonic 3DO (700 then $ 1095 now), became the most expensive consoles of all times and peoples, and also completely failed in the market precisely because of its price.

But as history shows, even if the price is set at the lowest level, this does not always lead to success. In 2001, the Nintendo Game Cube console began selling. Its price tag compares favorably with its competitors in the face of the very first Xbox and Playstation 2. However, the console could not compete with them and sold around the world in the amount of 21 million copies. Sony, meanwhile, despite the higher price, set a market record with 155 million PS2 consoles sold.
It’s hard to imagine that back in 1986, the beloved Dendy in our country (originally NES or Nintendo Entertainment System) cost as much as $ 412. Now the Chinese clones of this once great console are sold in any stall for 500-600 rubles.
The remaining consoles presented on the list, although not as interesting, are nevertheless quite indicative, as an example of the evolution of prices for gaming consoles over the past 36 years. Let's remember together how it was. Which of your game consoles did you remember more than the rest? Do you remember how and when you purchased it? Share with us in the comments.
