How much energy do new gaming consoles consume?

The American Organization for the Protection of Natural Resources (NRDC) presented its report on how much electricity is consumed by the recently released Playstation 4 and Xbox One gaming consoles. Both consoles manage energy consumption much more efficiently than their predecessors, but the overall figures for energy consumption are still impressive.

Consoles new generation consume about three times more energy than the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, due to the increased performance and additional features. At the moment, gaming consoles in the United States alone consume from 10 to 11 billion kWh per year. If you translate this energy into money - it turns out that American consumers spend $ 1 billion a year for electricity, which their game consoles spend.

Quite interesting graphs were published on the NRDC organization website. The first one shows how much energy both new consoles consume in different modes. At first glance, the Xbox One spends much more efficient energy, since the PS4 consumes a noticeably larger amount of watts during the main modes of operation, with the exception of the “standby” mode, when the console is in a state of sleep.

However, if it is more thoughtful to investigate the issue of the energy efficiency of both consoles, it becomes clear that Xbox One consumes significantly more electricity during the year. And this happens only because during the standby mode, the Microsoft console remains connected to the Internet, and the Kinect sensor constantly listens to the surrounding sounds. The total amount of energy consumed is well displayed on the second graph provided by the NRDC.

At the end of their report, NRDC experts turned directly to console manufacturers from Sony and Microsoft and asked them to focus their attention on increasing the efficiency of energy consumption in their gaming devices.
