As mentioned earlier, Microsoft is going to launch a new version of its Xbox One home gaming console, with which the Kinect sensor will not be offered. This will reduce the final cost of the console to $ 399 and in the future increase its sales. However, the good news does not end there. The fact is that Microsoft is negotiating with game publishers about the possibility of increasing the graphic performance of the Xbox One.
Since the prefix no longer needs the Kinect sensor and the associated functions will not be required, it will have more power to handle graphics in games, which will make it about the same performance as the PlayStation 4 from Sony.
Currently, the device “eats” 10 percent of its performance from the processor to work and support all the functions of the Kinect sensor (mainly for processing voice commands and gestures). Yusuf Mehdi, head of marketing for the Microsoft gaming division, decided to comment on the following:
“Now we are negotiating with our game publishers on the question of what prospects will be opened in connection with this. We will try to announce the new information very soon. ”
Most likely, Microsoft is looking for a way to provide developers with access to these 10 percent of GPU performance so that they can unlock the full potential of the game console from the Redmond company. Andrew Goossen, one of the developers of the Xbox One, also decided to share his thoughts:
“The Xbox One has 10 percent of the reserved GPU power that is inaccessible to game developers. This power is used by the GPU to process the commands received from the Kinect sensor, with which the console is linked. ”
“Power redundancy creates a strong isolation between the processing of a running game and the system itself. In other words, the resources that are spent on data processing with Kinect are not used to run games. In the future, we plan to provide game developers with more choices and open access to this reserved GPU power, but at the same time we will retain the full functionality of the system. ”
Unfortunately, Microsoft does not specify the information about when game developers will be given access to these hidden 10 percent of the power of the GPU.
