The recently announced portable SteamBoy console combines the most important functions for any gamer who prefers not to stop playing anywhere in his home or even on the road: the ability to access his games library while using Steam, a handy controller developed by Valve, as well as high-quality screen.
The SteamBoy console was presented to the public as part of the E3 2014 game exhibition by a group of developers independent of Valve. Of course, the iron stuffing of this tiny console doesn’t compare with what we were shown in the whole Steam Machines chain, however, players can play their favorite games at maximum settings using streaming technology when the game starts on the main computer and broadcast on the SteamBoy screen.
We saw something similar with the PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 4 consoles, when the game from the older console could be broadcast to a portable one, while the player could be located tens of kilometers from home, and a 3G or LTE connection would come to his aid. SteamBoy will also support Wi-Fi and 3G.
Inside the SteamBoy are a quad-core processor, 4 GB of RAM, 32 GB of internal memory, and the gameplay is displayed on a 5-inch 16: 9 touch screen. The prefix positions itself not only as an independent gaming device, but can also act as a companion device for a full-fledged Steam Machine or gaming PC. The developers, however, argue that the console will be able to run most of the Steam games on their own, although it is hard to believe in it. We need to wait for more information on this subject from its creators.
SteamBoy, which has not yet been marketed, is already facing a serious problem: the name of the console duplicates the product that already exists on the market - the devices for steam cleaning the floor of the Reliable Corporation are called the same way. How the developers of the handheld will settle this problem is still a mystery. SteamBoy should go on sale in 2015.
