American Council on Environmental Protection and Natural Resources (NRDC) their research on the issue of energy consumption by modern gaming consoles, and the results seemed to the experts not very rosy.
Console Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo with the release of each new generation consume more and more electricity. For example, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consume 2-3 times more electricity than their predecessor, the Xbox 360 and PS3. But even this did not upset the researchers the most.
Experts believe that the biggest threat is that now the consoles have got a “waiting mode”. This is the same mode when the console seems to be turned off externally, but in the background it downloads game updates, loads saved data to cloud services, and also “listens” to the surrounding sounds using the Kinect sensor. As you well understand, in this mode modern consoles stay most of the time.

Despite the fact that during the playback of games, the PlayStation 4 showed the highest power consumption - 137 watts, Xbox One turned out to be more “gluttonous” in sleep mode, which made it least profitable in terms of power consumption. You can see the annual consumption of consoles in this small table.

But not everything is as bad as experts say. After all, each console is eventually released in a new form factor with a partially recycled iron filling and much more economical in terms of electricity components. Take a look at this chart, and you will see that each successive version of the PS3 and Xbox 360 consumed less and less electricity.

As a result of a study of general market trends, taking into account the speed of sales of new consoles, it turns out that in one year only American players spend about $ 1 billion on games, consuming about 11 billion kilowatt-hour. Quite impressive figures, considering that the fourth largest city in the US, Houston, consumes the same amount of energy per year.

And what do you, dear readers, think about the ever-growing "voracity" of modern electronic gadgets and devices? Should we worry about the future?
