We have already shown you the reaction of children to old personal computers on the example of the Apple II, and today you will see the reaction of American teenagers to the first 8-bit game console Nintendo Entertainment System. By the way, along with ordinary children in the test, the actress of the series “Game of thrones” Macy Williams, who plays the role of Aria Stark, also took part.

The prefix Nintendo Entertainment System, or simply NES, appeared in the USA in 1985 and in fact was the American version of the Japanese console Famicom (1983), known in Russia under the pirate brand Dendy (to our country, however, this console came only to the beginning of 90 x).

From the 8-bit prefix with the NES slon familiar to Russians, it was different in that the cartridge loading system was completely different. So the company Nintendo decided to deal with pirated clones of their consoles and fake cartridges. American game cartridges themselves have become much wider and larger in size than their Japanese counterparts. In our country, it was the Japanese form factor that was used, remember the yellow small cartridges that the children of the 90s were changing with each other.

The Nes

A special chip was also added to the NES console, which checked whether the cartridge was genuine or whether it was a regular Chinese fake. Because of this, each cartridge was equipped with additional contact tracks on the board, and the cartridges were loaded into the console frontally: first, the cartridge was horizontally inserted into a special slot under the hinged lid, and then pressed down with your fingers, like a video tape in the domestic Electronics Electronic VM-12. It was much more difficult than just sticking a cartridge with the game into the top box, as it was implemented in Dendy.

Modern children, seeing the NES, did not immediately realize what it was. It's no joke - a hefty box of obscure destinations straight from 1985. Some have suggested that this is a VCR or projector, but only a small part of the subjects, upon seeing the Nintendo logo, guessed that it would be a question of video games. One girl, picking up the game controller, remembered that she had the exact same stylized cover for the iPhone, but she hadn’t known until this moment that it was a copy of the gamepad of the 8-bit console.

When it came to games, everyone immediately recognized the name of the plumber Mario in the names of popular hits for NES, but not all were familiar with other cult series like The Legend of Zelda, Dragon Warrior or Metroid. Playing old games, however, was not so easy either. The gamepad turned out to be inconvenient, the Mario character could not go back if he missed something, and it was much easier to fall into the abyss than to jump over it. Yes, and in the cartridge blow it is necessary that the game is working as it should!

According to the results of the research, the organizers asked: what do the participants think about this prefix? Many admitted that modern consoles are much more convenient, and the games are more beautiful for them. But some noted that they like the simplicity of the old games, in which only two buttons are needed: A and B. Some expressed their respect for the NES, because with it, in fact, the process of popularizing video games in the world began, and one even called The old console hipster "vinyl console", comparing it with a retro record player.

And what can you tell us about your memories regarding 8-bit video games? If you have children - did they play such games or prefer modern entertainment and what do they think about old toys?
