Unlike the previous generation of home gaming consoles, each of which was built on the basis of different architectures, the new generation of consoles - Xbox One and PlayStation 4 - are based on the same microarchitecture of AMD Jaguar and operate on the basis of half-ordered eight-core APU-chips from the company AMD, which simultaneously perform the role of both the central and graphics processors. However, the Web has information that can indirectly indicate that the Xbox One consoles are developing new, more compact and cheaper processors.
This rumor originates from the pages of the social network LinkedIn, where on the page of Daniel McConnell, tom-manager AMD, it is indicated that the company is engaged in the production of chips for next-generation game consoles. Interesting among all this are the following excerpts: "The production of the first APUs for the Microsoft Xbox One game console based on the 28 nm process technology, as well as the derivative of the cheaper 20 nm technology, was successfully planned and established" ... "Two executive teams were created to work with two successful audits APU for Xbox. We are talking about the creation of leadership positions around which further production teams can be formed to increase the volume of SOC production. "
Such a description may indicate that Microsoft is currently involved in the creation of new, more compact and potentially cheaper processors for its new consoles. The current version of the Xbox One CPU is based on a 28 nm process. At the same time, adapting the 20 nm process technology can mean the possibility of using a more compact game console with a cheaper and at the same time more efficient cooling system.
In addition, it should be borne in mind that the processor is one of the most expensive components of the Xbox One, and the transition to a 20 nm process technology will significantly reduce the cost of manufacturing such crystals and, therefore, generally reduce the price of the entire console.
However, it should also be mentioned here that, despite all the possible benefits from such new chips, we are unlikely to see them in the very near future. Firstly, because for cheaper 20 nm processors it will be necessary to first adjust the technology for their production, and new technologies for chip production, as you know, are not cheap at the early stage of their development. Secondly, the problem is that most of the plants and production lines of TSMC, the Taiwanese company that produces various microchips, are currently loaded with chip manufacturing for new iPhone smartphones, iPad tablets, and a new line of Nvidia and AMD desktop graphics chips , all of which are based on 20 nm process technology.
Of course, it should be pointed out that no official comments from the same Microsoft or Sony have yet been received, but it is very likely that if such developments do take place, then, most likely, AMD is engaged in a similar task for the APU of the PS4 game console.
