The Japanese giant continues to get rid of unprofitable business units. One of these units for many years was the studio Sony Online Entertainment, which gave the world the game Planetside 2, DC Universe Online and the recent survival simulator after the zombie apocalypse H1Z1. Now all this intellectual property was in the hands of the new owner of the studio.
Buyer SOE studio was the investment firm Columbus Nova from New York. The amount of the transaction was not disclosed, but it seems that the studio was worth more than one hundred million dollars, given the huge number of subscribers of numerous online games, which can still be well welded.
"This deal means that Sony Online Entertainment is now an independent studio, so that it can focus on multiplatform gaming projects. Our games will now go out not only for the PlayStation and PC consoles, but also for the Xbox consoles and mobile platforms, "reads the SOE press release.
President of the studio John Smidley in his Twitter wrote the following:
"I can not wait for the moment when I can finally develop games for Xbox One!".
After the transition to a new owner, the studio will receive a new name. From now on, it will be called Daybreak Game Company. At the same time, there are no stops for work on current projects. The purchase of the studio also does not harm and has long been functioning MMO games, in which millions of users play daily. For them, this transaction will pass completely unnoticed.
The studio was founded in 1995 under the name Sony Interactive Studios America. In 1998, it was renamed Sony Online Entertainment. For the years of its existence, it has released such popular projects as EverQuest, The Matrix Online, Untold Legends, Cosmic Rift, Free Realms, PlanetSide and many others. In recent years, the studio has brought considerable losses to the publisher in the face of Sony, which, most likely, was the reason for the sale.
Given that the new head of Sony Kazuo Hirai very decisively approached the issue of dumping excess ballast from a sinking ship, it can be assumed that more than one unit of the Japanese corporation will go under the knife. Let's remind you that earlier Sony got rid of the business connected with laptops. And not so long ago there was a rumor that Samsung plans to purchase a mobile unit from Sony.
Whatever it was, Sony is confidently moving towards finally getting out of the debt hole, where the company was driven by the previous director Howard Stringer. In a recent financial report of the corporation, very optimistic forecasts and impressive figures were published. Only the PlayStation 4 gaming consoles sold 6.4 million in the last quarter of the outgoing fiscal year. Total sales of the company's products grew by 6.1% in the quarter, which is also a good sign. Well, we will believe in the best and wish Sony success in this difficult matter.
